Frequently Asked Questions

How do I optimize images?

Drag and drop images directly onto the app window. Select a compression level and your images will be optimized automatically.

What image formats are supported?

Better Image Optimizer supports JPEG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, GIF (including animated), HEIF/HEIC, and TIFF.

Where are optimized files saved?

You can choose from four save locations in Settings:

  • Next to Original – Creates a copy alongside the original file
  • Overwrite Original – Replaces the original file
  • Downloads – Saves to your Downloads folder
  • Custom Folder – Saves to a folder you choose

How do Watch Folders work?

Watch Folders automatically optimize new images added to designated folders. Go to Settings > Watch Folders to add a folder. Each folder can have its own compression level. The app monitors these folders in the background and optimizes new images as they appear.

Why does the app need folder access?

Better Image Optimizer is sandboxed for your security. When saving next to original files or using watch folders, macOS requires you to explicitly grant access to those folders. The Downloads folder is always accessible without additional permissions.

Is my data sent anywhere?

No. All image processing happens locally on your Mac. The app does not require an internet connection, does not collect any data, and does not use analytics or tracking. Your images never leave your device.

How do I report a bug or request a feature?

Email us at mikko@mbit.fi with details about the issue or your feature idea. Screenshots are helpful for bug reports.
